Objective PR.2 Assure affordable and high quality public health facilities

Policies/Design Strategies

  • Promote transit density near hospitals and other health facilities, to minimize public parking and the use of cars, if necessary, provide a hospital shuttle from the nearest transit station.1
  • Include access to healthcare facilities as part of the Transportation Management Plan.2,3
  • Site new hospitals and health facilities to maximize access for the population served, but minimize noise and other health impacts on local residents4,5
  • Incorporate environmentally sustainable practices into the design, building and operation of new health care facilities.6,7
  • Preserve the availability of sites for civic facilities, such as hospitals, to ensure that facilities are adequate for population growth8
  • Limit the siting of residential development and other sensitive uses (such as schools, childcare, and senior citizen facilities) near medical waste facilities.9
  • Allow flexibility in development for major, multi-functional institutional uses that serve the greater community. For example, build hospitals near community gardens, and/or with space for educational trainings and outreach.10
  • Promote awareness of Healthy San Francisco to building contractors hired by developers and future employees in neighborhood serving retail. 11,12
  • Encourage contractors and employers with less than 20 employees to provide health insurance to employees13,14
  • Ensure that contractors and developers who hire day laborers carry active and sufficient workers compensation insurance and that temporary employees are advised of their rights to utilize it if they are injured on the job15,16
